    Description

    “Admiral Samuel Dupont,
    Commanding the Fleet
    off Charleston.”
    Harper's Weekly
    1863
This is a single sheet only which was published as the front page of the
    April 25, 1863
    issue of
    Harper's Weekly,
America’s leading illustrated paper during the 1800s. It is
    over 150 years old
. It measures 11 x 16 inches in size, is in very good and attractive condition, with a slight bit of smudging or age spots browning along its blank edge margins (see photo).
It presents a fine portrait of Samuel Dupont, commanding the Federal fleet off the shores of South Carolina. The drawing shows him cradling a sword in the crook of his arm. It is based on a photo taken by Gutekunst of Philadelphia.
There was a short article related to the cover portrait elsewhere in the issue, and a photocopy of that item will be included. Titled,
    “ADMIRAL DUPONT,”
it consists of 34 lines of text, and concludes by say that Dupont
“has lately been mustering his ironclads for the bombardment of Charleston, and on 7th made a preliminary attack . . . . Having felt the enemy, the gallant Admiral is now in a position to make a real attack as soon as his preparations are completed.”
