    This image is from a photo of Grant possibly taken at the time of his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General in 1864, and published before his promotion to full General by President Andrew Johnson in 1865. You would think that Lees surrender would be included in the border illustrations if that had already occurred. In the fine print it states that it was "Entered according to an act of Congress, 1864...in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York". Given the timeline of promotions it looks as if this was published before his final promotion in military rank in 1865. That last year of the war must have aged this man considerably.
    About the pictures: #1 is a close up, #2 shows the picture matted and #3 shows the entire engraving. In that one the borders show it's age with moisture damage etc., but that does not extend into the picture area, but does show in the title area at the bottom.
