    Description

Original Antique Engraving - Confederate Ship 'Alabama' - Full Page
Title reads:  "The Confederate privateer steamer 'Alabama' - Captain Raphael  Semmes"
Much is written about the 'Alabama' and the notorious Captain Semmes.  I've written a fair amount about them myself.  But rather than going over it all again, I'd suggest you read about them on the internet, say,
    Wikipedia.
A fascinating account of the exploits of Semmes and the ultimate fate of the 'Alabama'.  In the north, he was regarded as a pirate, while in the south he was considered a hero.
I've handled a few of these prints of the 'Alabama' and while this one has the clearest, sharpest image of them all, it's not without its flaws.  There were three tears in the top edge which necessitated repair.  I've done that, using a special thin archival tape made especially for that purpose.  It solved the problem.  But I've reflected this in a lower price than I would normally ask for this print.
On the backside, there's an illustration, also the full page, of black children dancing and entertaining a group of Union soldiers.  Not one of my favorite illustrations.
The page was taken from Frank Leslie's Illustrated 'Famous Leaders and Battle Scenes of the Civil War' published after the war had ended, published in 1897.   The page size is:  10-3/4" x  14-3/4"
