Description
Original Antique Wood Engraving - Civil War, 1864Title: "Cutting the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal"
I acquired this print as part of a large collection of early Civil War engravings. Many, like this one, were loose
and already cut from the pages where they had originally been published. Often, as is the case here, the text
relating to the illustration has been trimmed away so I can't elaborate on it.
It's particularly confusing to me, because I don't understand why the Union troops would be 'Cutting the Canal' when the canal had been in use since 1830, long before the war. Perhaps they were upgrading it or even diverting it. It was an important strategic supply route and was often targeted by the confederates.
This print is in excellent condition. There are two small illustrations on the back side - 1) 'Pillaging at Hagerstown'
and 2) 'Sacking a flour mill' Also, copy relating to the Virginia Campaign, but nothing relating to the canal.
Image size: 7" x 9" Paper size: 9" x 10-1/2"
