Entered, according to Act of Congress AD 1862 by Virtue & Co. in the clerk's office of the district court of the United States for the southern district of N.Y.
FRANZ SIGEL (b.1824 - d.1902) German military officer and immigrant to the United States. In the U.S. he was a teacher, newspaperman, politician, and served as a Union Major general in the American Civil War. His ability to recruit German-speaking immigrants to the Union armies got him the approval of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. The Battle of Carthage, also known as the Engagement near Carthage, took place at the beginning of the American Civil War on July 5, 1861, near Carthage, Missouri. At the Battle of Carthage the experienced Colonel Franz Sigel commanded 1,100 Federal soldiers intent on
keeping Missouri within the Union.
